Podiatry Treatments:

General Podiatry for ALL ages

We treat patients from all ages and we believe that foot care is an important part of your general health.

Nails, corns and callous treatment

A corn or callous are areas of thickened skin that occur in areas of pressure. These are a natural way for the body to protect itself but can become very painful if not managed properly.

Nail Surgery

We also perform the treatment or removal of ingrown toe nails using local anaesthetics.

Gait analysis

Gait Analysis means measuring and analysing the biomechanics of your feet and legs as you walk or run on a treadmill.

Sports Podiatry and Orthotic Therapy

Sports Podiatry is the treatment of foot, ankle, knee and lower limb injuries by altering and improving lower limb function. Some people require orthoses in the management and prevention of these injuries.

Radial Shockwave Therapy

Using the Swiss DolorClast method we can offer treatment for chronic musculoskeletal pain such as Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis and muscle trigger points.

Forefoot, Arch and Heel Pain

Arch and heel pain is frequently the result of a condition commonly called Plantar Fasciitis. Other conditions can affect the feet causing significant pain and a Podiatrist can diagnose and treat these conditions.

Nail Laser Therapy for Fungal Toenails

The use of laser in podiatry is not new. For years lasers have been used safely on the foot for several conditions. Although the 1064 laser is FDA approved for the temporary clearing of nails, new lasers are now being used to treat nail fungus.

Diabetes Foot Health Assessments

Examining the feet can offer important clues to Diabetic Foot Health. Monitoring nerve, blood vessel and foot health allows for early intervention and appropriate specialist referral.

See a Podiatrist if:

It is recommended to see one of our friendly Podiatrists at Patterson Allied Health if:

  • You have pain in your feet
  • You are on your feet all day
  • You have skin and nail problems (ingrown or discoloured toenails, corns, skin rashes)
  • You have foot odour
  • You have a foot injury
  • You have health problems such as Diabetes or Arthritis
  • You have recurrent trips and falls
  • You have problems getting shoes to fit comfortably
  • You have have lumps or bumps, bunions or misshapen toes

Why do Feet need Specialist Care?

Our feet are very complex – they house a quarter of the bones in the body, as well as a network of muscles, ligaments and joints. They are also vulnerable to injury and disease; there are over three hundred identified foot aliments.

While our feet suffer wear – by the age of fifty, our feet have lost up to half of the shock-absorbing capability of the natural foot pad – they cannot be replaced like a pair of shoes.

Quick Facts about Podiatry

  • Working feet can cover as many as 24 kilometers in a day
  • Nearly 20% of all workplace injury claims relate to injuries to the feet and toes.
  • By the time we reach 50, our feet have covered 86,000 kilometres.
  • People with diabetes are at a greater risk of developing serious foot problems.
  • While running, your feet can absorb up to three times your body weight.
  • 20% of cases of rheumatoid arthritis and 35% of stress fractures occur in the feet.
  • You feet can carry you on a journey of 128,000 kilometers in a lifetime.
  • Problems such as calluses, corns and blisters can be caused by pressure.
  • Women have about four times as many foot problems as men; lifelong patterns of wearing high heels often are the culprit.
  • Your feet mirror your general health. Such conditions as arthritis, diabetes, nerve and circulatory disorders can show their initial symptoms in the feet – so foot ailments can be your first sign of more serious medical problems.

Podiatry for Children

Children’s feet are still forming and are quiet fragile. They can be damaged easily by shoes and socks that are too small. Early examination of children’s feet is a preventative measure.

Uneven shoe wear; skin rashes, lumps and bumps on the feet; pain in the feet or legs; frequent tripping and falling are all signs of potential problems which is why early examination is very important.

What are Foot Orthoses?

Orthoses are custom-made or semi custom-made devices to correct your foot posture.

They alleviate aches and pains in feet, knees, hips and lower back.

When prescribing orthotics, our podiatrists conduct a full biomechanical assessment to determine the alignment and the function of the foot.

What Problems can be Treated with Foot Orthoses?

There are many conditions, which may be treated with foot orthoses:

  • Lower back, hip, knee pain
  • Intoed feet (pigeon toed)
  • Ankle Pain
  • Heel Pain
  • Forefoot Pain
  • Bunions
  • Flat Feet
  • Excessive Shoe Wear
  • To redistribute pressure to decrease callous & corns

What is the difference between a semi customised orthotic and a fully customised orthotic?

Semi customised devices are made to a standard arch height and to a standard degree of correction. The device is made according to the size of your feet, via a foot tracing taken by the podiatrist. These devices are suitable for those people who only require a minimal amount of correction or support.

Fully customised orthotics are devices which are made to a specified degree of correction and support, which is determined by the podiatrist to gain the most effective results. A plaster mould is taken of your feet and sent off to a laboratory which uses the case to create the orthotic shell. These devices are suitable for those patients who require a prescribed amount of correction or support.

Radial Shock Wave Therapy

Radial shockwaves are high energy acoustic waves. They are transmitted through the surface of the skin and spread radially into the body. The body responds with increased metabolic activity around the site of the pain, stimulating and accelerating the healing process.
RSWT is used successfully in sports medicine and daily practice all over the world. Its effectiveness is demonstrated in many clinical studies. RSWT isFDA approved!

Fungal Nail Laser

The use of laser in podiatry is not new. For years lasers have been used safely on the foot for several conditions. Although the 1064 laser is FDA approved for the temporary clearing of nails, new lasers are now being used to treat nail fungus. These lasers have some advantages and are approved by the FDA for many other treatments but laser treatment of nail fungus is considered an “off label use”.

Foot Mobilisation

Foot Mobilisation Technique (FMT) is a proven alternative treatment solution, that uses the ‘hands-on’ techniques of joint mobilisation, combined with corrective exercises, to fix the structural cause of foot, heel, ankle, leg, knee, hip & back pain, reducing the need for orthotics, surgery or medication.

Paraffin Wax Bath

Wax heat therapy provides intensive moisture therapy that nourishes skin and cuticles while penetrating heat increases circulation, eases aching joints, relaxes stiff muscles, and leaves skin radiant and healthy looking.

Heel Pain Program

The Heel Pain Program treats the Inflammation and Pain in the short term and addresses the underlying cause of the problem with ongoing support and rehabilitation of the foot to reduce the risk of the condition reoccurring in the future.

Fungal Nail, Warts and Skin Conditions

The use of laser in podiatry is not new. For years lasers have been used safely on the foot for several conditions. Although the 1064 laser is FDA approved for the temporary clearing of nails, new lasers are now being used to treat nail fungus. Fungal Nail Laser

Laser Treatment of Fungal Nail

The use of laser in podiatry is not new. For years lasers have been used safely on the foot for several conditions. Although the 1064 laser is FDA approved for the temporary clearing of nails, new lasers are now being used to treat nail fungus. These lasers have some advantages and are approved by the FDA for many other treatments but laser treatment of nail fungus is considered an “off label use”.

The ability of the 1064 laser energy to gently heat the nail bed makes it ideal for the safe and effective desired result of nail clearing. The effects of 1064 nanometer laser energy on nail fungi are two fold and understood in relation to cellular chemical reactions within fungal cells that are necessary for fungal growth and survival. The photo-thermal effect changes cellular metabolism and at increased temperature (42°C), cell components are damaged and metabolism is altered. Clinicians report a photo-chemical effect that further compromises fungal cell enzymes and proteins. Lipids in cell membranes are changed in structure and their function of protecting and regulating the internal environment of the cell becomes further compromised resulting in fungal death and nail clearance.

Podiatrists experienced with clinically treating onychomycosis have come to the conclusion that the treatment of fungal nails is a process and the prevention of reinfection is critical to achieving success.

Laser is an excellent choice for patients who do not want to risk taking oral medications.

Traditional Treatments

There are several treatments for nail fungus (onychomycosis). The most conservative is to just thin down the nail every 9 weeks and apply topical medications but this type of medicine does not work well if the whole nail is involved. Oral medications (Lamasil) can be prescribed but elevates liver enzymes and can cause liver damage. Women are warned not to take oral medications if they are going to become pregnant.

Onychomycosis

The most common cause of brittle yellowing nails is fungal infection. Fungi are dermatophytes that feed on nail keratin. These organisms propagate in a warm, dark and moist environment. There is no better place for nail fungus to reside and infect toes than in shoes. Infected nails have yellowing or white spots on the nails. As the infection develops, nails will get thicker, further discolour and fracture. Progressive infection of additional nails is common.

What is Foot Mobilisation Therapy? (FMT)

Do you suffer from aches and pains in your feet, heels, knees, hips or back?

Foot Mobilisation Technique (FMT) is a proven alternative treatment solution, that uses the ‘hands-on’ techniques of joint mobilisation, combined with corrective exercises, to fix the structural cause of foot, heel, ankle, leg, knee, hip & back pain, reducing the need for orthotics, surgery or medication.

Foot Mobilisation has its roots in manipulative therapy, which is a long established technique widely used by the physiotherapy, chiropractic and osteopathic professions.

FMT treatment focus is to provide clients with long lasting improvements in their foot or leg pain. This gentle and painless technique stimulates the body’s inherent desire to repair & restore itself.

Kristi Boles has done further training in Foot Mobilisation Techniques (FMT) with Mr Ted Jednak.

The first foot and ankle manipulative techniques were developed in the 1920s by American Dr John Martin Hiss, a student of manipulative therapy. Dr Hiss went on to open clinics across America, where osteopaths, podiatrists, chiropractors and medical doctors worked side by side to treat foot problems.

Ted Jedynak, podiatrist, studied and trained with one of Dr Hiss’ students, Dr Harvey Lampell, in 1994.

Since then, Mr Jedynak has specialised exclusively in Foot Mobilisation Techniques (FMT). He has developed and refined the assessment and treatment techniques for successful foot mobilisation and regularly presents at conferences and workshops to teach colleagues the science and art of Foot Mobilisation.

Conditions FMT Treats

Biomechanical & musculo-skeletal disorders of the foot & leg result from abnormal compensation of the affected structures. Joint dysfunction will cause compensation of related structures such as bones, cartilage, muscle, ligaments, tendons, nerves and blood vessels.

Correcting joint dysfunction with FMT will aid the treatment of the following conditions:

What is a Paraffin Wax Bath?

Paraffin wax has a very high heat capacity, meaning it is able to absorb and retain a great amount of heat. A paraffin wax spa takes advantage of paraffin’s heat-retaining capacity in a simple process called heat transfer. As it melts, the paraffin becomes a liquid and is able to retain more heat. Then, when a hand, foot, or other area is dipped into the heated bath, the phase of the paraffin that surrounds the dipped area quickly changes into a solid. The heat that is given off is called the heat of fusion.

More simply, the heat that goes into melting the paraffin comes out when it solidifies into a comforting paraffin coating, thus transferring the heat into the affected limb. Another way to look at it is the paraffin is the medium that transfers heat from the Therabath to the painful area.

At the same time, the heat from the paraffin opens pores and increases circulation in the skin. This is why paraffin is so beneficial to skin, leaving skin softened and more radiant. See more information on paraffin treatment hygiene.

Wax heat therapy provides intensive moisture therapy that nourishes skin and cuticles while penetrating heat increases circulation, eases aching joints, relaxes stiff muscles, and leaves skin radiant and healthy looking.
